In 1993, I launched By Storm as a cruisewear collection, offering everything a woman would need for a holiday—from swimwear to elegant evening wear—all designed to pack beautifully and arrive crease-free. We opened our first shop on Milngavie Road in Bearsden and quickly built a loyal clientele.
Then, in 1995, a young bride named Sarah walked into our shop. Although we weren’t displaying wedding dresses at the time, she asked if we would design and create her wedding gown and bridesmaids’ dresses. Perhaps she had heard about my earlier business, Sequin, which I ran with my partner Pam in the 1970s, designing unconventional wedding dresses.
Of course, we said yes.
Sarah’s wedding marked our return to the bridal industry and set us on a path that would shape the future of our business. Since then, we have exhibited our designs at the Scottish Wedding Show at the SEC and have had the privilege of dressing countless brides on their special day.
For Sarah, we created a beautiful silk wedding dress, and her sister wore a silk bridesmaid’s gown. It was the beginning of a wonderful relationship.
Now, more than three decades later, Sarah has returned to us once again. Our business has grown and moved to larger premises, but the trust she placed in us all those years ago remains the same. This time, she asked us to create the couture wedding dress for her daughter, Victoria.
It has been a true honour to be part of another chapter in their family’s story. We have designed Victoria’s stunning wedding gown, dressed all of the bridesmaids, and created a beautiful Mother of the Bride outfit for Sarah. We have also designed a bespoke outfit for Jennifer, Victoria’s grandmother.
To have dressed three generations of the same family over a span of 32 years is something very special. It is a wonderful reminder of how relationships built through craftsmanship, trust, and shared memories can come full circle.
